Dara Calleary, Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo, has called upon An Post to ensure it has representation at tonight’s public meeting (Friday March 16 ) to discuss the impending closure of the post office in Knockmore.
Deputy Calleary stated: “It makes no commercial sense for An Post to turn its back on 1,200 households at a time when it is trying to develop its across-the-counter business.
“I have appealed to the Minister to apply direct pressure to An Post to at the very least advertise the franchise.
“I expect An Post to attend this evening’s meeting in Knockmore to explain to the people how and why this decision has been taken. Having had a postal service in the village since 1849, a full and proper explanation as to how this decision was reached without any consultation with the community is needed, especially when there is an interested party to take over the running of the Post Office,” he said.
“The people of Knockmore, particularly elderly citizens, deserve to continue to avail of the wonderful service that they have been provided over the years by the retiring post office operators Billy and Ann Rogers.”
