Members of Western Lakes Cycling Club gathered in Inch’s Bar, Ballinrobe, recently to launch the new club website along with its calendar of events for the coming year. The main focus of the night was to launch the new look club website designed by Design West, Kiltimagh. The venture has been a great success resulting in a catchy new website containing the club’s up to date information and activities and at the same time is very user friendly.
Various representatives also took the opportunity to welcome new members on the night and outlined various events taking place within the club for 2012. The club at present has over 100 members and is hoping to double its numbers over the next few years with many attractions.
Each year the club promotes over 30 events ranging from recreational leisure events to international competitive elite events. The club has its own building where spinning and strength and conditions classes run on a weekly basis. It also has Connacht’s only BMX track is adjacent to the building where training and competition take place regularly even during winter months under floodlights.
Lakes v Wheelers kicks off soon
The Western Lakes/Covey League kicks off on March 20 in Tourmakeady with a 5K hill climb of Lally’s Mountain, the league between Western Lakes and Westport Covey Wheelers continues throughout the summer with races every week. For the racing enthusiasts the Bog Week two day kicks off on April 28 and 29 and in August there is the ever growing Ballinrobe two day.
For those interested in the leisure events the Polkadot on May 12 and Lap of the Mask on July 21 provide various distances for all abilities.
New for this year, especially for new members, there will be a beginners’ club league solely for WLCC members. There will be races once a month designed to give members a chance to dip their toes into the racing side of the club. The races will be handicapped to give everyone a fair advantage as this new league is mainly for those starting out. To mark the 10th anniversary of the last Mizen to Malin leisure spin, a group of Western Lakes Cycling Club members are taking on the Holy Grail of Leisure Cycling in Ireland and cycling from Mizen Head to Malin Head in three days from Thursday 30 August to Saturday, September 1.
