Mayo county manager, Peter Hynes, has called on people to pay the €100 household charge for the maintenance of essential public services.
Mr Hynes stated: “The €100 household charge is targeted to provide the finance for the local government fund which will in 2012 be worth €27.8m. The collection of the charge is critical to enable Mayo County Council to continue to provide essential services including roads, water, housing, parks, libraries, and our arts programme.”
Mr Hynes referred to a statement published by the County and City Managers' Association outlining the position nationally, which reads as follows:
“While local authority management are doing everything possible to maintain essential services at local level, there is the real threat that if income targets for the sector through the household charge are not met that they will not be able to continue to maintain all local services this year,” stated Hubert Kearns, chairman, County and City Managers Association (CCMA ).
“The CCMA are appealing to all residential property owners to support their local authorities by paying their €100 household charge before the end of March so that their community can continue to receive essential local services throughout 2012.
“If income targets from the Household Charge are not met, local authorities will not be able to fund local essential services and that is the bottom line.
