Mayo Healthy Reading Scheme

“At least five per cent of the population (of Europe ) suffers from serious diagnosable mental illness; between 15 and 20 per cent of European adults are affected by more general mental health problems,” according to the World Health Organisation. Yet there can still be a significant taboo attached to mental health difficulties. However the simple presence of books relating to mental health issues in a public library, available and accessible to all, can help reduce this stigma, and raise awareness of such issues in the public mind. This is the aim of the Mayo Healthy Reading Scheme, a joint initiative between Mayo County Library and the HSE West.

The books in the Mayo Healthy Reading Scheme have been recommended by health professionals to assist with a variety of emotional or psychological problems. Topics covered include bereavement, depression, relationship problems, parenting, and self esteem. The list of books are provided to individuals both through the healthcare system and through the library service and all of the titles are available for loan at your local library.

Books can help – do not suffer alone. Call to your library today.
