Chinese restaurant owner fined for employing illegal worker

A Chinese restaurant owner was fined €500 for employing a Chinese man without a a work permit at Castlebar District Court this week, while the worker was fined for working without a permit.

The employer Lin Ho, with an address at the Mandarin Kitchen, New Antrim Street, Castlebar appeared in court alongside Ng Seng, his employee, of the same address.

Decetive Garda Declan Sweeny in his evidence to the court said that he, alongside Garda Roisin Loftus from the Castlebar Garda Immigration Unit, went to the Mandarin Kitchen on August 18 2008 at 8.55pm. There they spoke to Seng and asked him for his work permit. Seng told them he had none. Detective Garda Sweeny called back to the restaurant on September 6 when he spoke to Ho who admitted that he had employed Seng without him having a work permit.

Ho pleaded guilty to employing Seng without a work permit and Seng pleaded guilty to working without a permit. Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined Ho €500 and Seng €250.
