For anyone who wishes to know the rules of the water, Mayo Sailing Club is hosting a lecture entitled The Rules of Racing by Ed Alcock on Thursday February 23 at 7.30pm in the GMIT, Castlebar. It will outline the laws that govern racing on the water. Many boats, big and small, engage in the sport of racing. The Racing Rules of Sailing govern the conduct of yacht racing, dinghy racing, windsurfing, kite surfing, and virtually any other form of racing around a course with more than one vessel while powered by the wind. The forthcoming lecture will cover topics like rights and obligations on the water, giving way, keeping clear, red flags, and protest forms.
The lecture will be given by Ed Alcock, who is the racing manager of the Irish Sailing Association. Alcock co-ordinates the race training and has a wealth of experience and expertise in the area traversing the country giving talks and lectures to sailing clubs and co-ordinating courses for sailors, officials, and judges for sail racing.
This talk is aimed at sailors of all craft from dinghies to cruisers. It is for anybody who wants to get involved in sailing and racing and is a great opportunity for anyone thinking of joining Mayo Sailing Club in its coming season. The club organises racing on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the sailing season. The boats will be in the water again in eight weeks time and this lecture offers an opportunity to prepare for the thrill and spills of the racing events.
