Scoil Acla 2008

Scoil Acla classes commence on July 28 in creative writing, and traditional music song and dance. The official opening by poet John F Deane takes place on Monday evening July 28 in Gielty's, Dooagh with registration for all classes and activities taking place that morning at 9am.

On Tuesday July 29 there is a talk on fiddle making by Graham Wright at Gielty's, Dooagh 3pm; a Seisúin at Ted Lavelle’s, Cashel from 6pm to 8pm and at 8.30pm there will be ceoil in Óstán Oileáin Acla at 8.30pm. On Wednesday July 30 there will be a traditional music recital in St Thomas's Church at 8.30pm. (Tickets for this event only available from local outlets—Achill Tourism 098 47353. )

On Thursday July 31 there will be a competition for young musicians at 6.30pm at Ted Lavelle's and at 8.30pm there will be a reading of poetry by Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin and Macdara Woods at St Thomas's Church, Dugort. Admission is €10 and advance tickets can be bought from Achill Tourism. On Friday August 1 there is a reading from a creative writing workshop in Ted Lavelle’s, Cashel at 8.30pm and a gala concert featuring top traditional musicians will take place in the Wavecrest Hotel, Dooagh at 9pm. On Saturday August 2 there will be an outdoor concert at 3pm at the car park of The Pub, Dooagh.

Scoil Acla concludes on Sunday August 3 with a Mass on Sunday at 12pm. Scoil Acla is funded by Ealaín na Gaeltachta, Arts Council of Ireland, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Achill Tourism, Comhlacht Forbartha Áitiúil Acla, Mayo County Council and by donations from the local community.
