The ever-popular Castlebar Concert Band performs a typically rousing concert at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday, February 23, at 8pm.
One of the longest surviving town bands in the region, Castlebar Concert Band has been active since the 1920s. Comprising up to 32 members of all age groups, the band is a regular feature throughout the year at concerts, festivals, charity functions, and street carolling, while the marching element performs at football matches and parades. This year for the first time the band will be leading the Mayo Men’s Association of New York down Fifth Avenue on St Patrick’s Day, and will also perform at Mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral on the day. For this Linenhall concert, the band performs a programme of music to suit all tastes, from light classical to jazz and a few marches too, under the baton of director of music Jackie Graham. Can Percussion trio’s forthcoming performance scheduled to take place on Monday, February 27, at 8pm the Linenhall Arts Centre has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.
Lucy McKenna exhibition at the Linenhall
The Darker Wood, an exhibition by artist Lucy McKenna, continues at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar. The exhibition comprises photographic prints, drawings, papercut installation, and video, based on the notion of fairytales, myths, and legends as expressions of the human condition. The Darker Wood is the result of a residency undertaken by the artist in 2010 on Toronto Island, Canada. Works created there were in response to the island itself, its history and landscape, in particular to the clearance of the island for intended parkland in the 1960s. The damaged trees that remained from that action became a major influence, as did the fairytales of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. A graduate of NCAD, Lucy McKenna is currently based in Kilkenny. She has exhibited in Ireland, the US, and Canada. The exhibition runs until February 25.
