Invitation to participate in Christmas Food Fair

We are presently organising a Christmas Food Fair for Saturday December 13 2008 (11am to 5pm ) in the grounds of the museum. The Education and Outreach Department will also run a number of public events on that day. If you are a food producer and would like participate please contact the museum as soon as possible. The Museum is keen to reflect the customs, culture and traditions of all people in the region, so we would also welcome enquiries from non-Irish food producers.

The Knitting Circle

This is a drop-in: event come along and exchange patterns, learn new techniques, bring along your knitting and join in. This event will take place on Friday November 21 from 11am to 1pm.

Storytelling Performance: Fadó, Fadó

November is a ideal time for storytelling with the coming of the dark evenings. Pull up a chair and join Niall de Burca as he relates some of his favourite tales. This event will take place on Friday November 21 from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

Wake Rituals and Traditions

Join Ann Ridge to hear about wake rituals and traditions in rural Ireland. This event will take place on Sunday November 23 from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Connacht Spinners and Weavers

Come along to meet the group or join them for the day by bringing your own knitting, crochet, felting, etc. This event will take place on Sunday November 29 from 11am to 4pm.

Interactive Performance: Living History

Join Michael Moylan of Irish History Live to experience living in the past and everyday life in Ireland around the 1900s. Try on the clothes, find out about the food and much more. This event will take place on Thursday November 27 and Friday November 28 at 2.30pm. This event is aimed at junior cycle history students.

Schools Competition: Extraordinary Ordinary People

The National Museum of Ireland Country Life is inviting primary and post-primary students to nominate the most extraordinary person in your area. This event is devided into two categories, Upper Primary fourth to sixth class and Junior Cert 1st to 3rd year. We would like to find out from you something about a person from your area who has made an important contribution to your community between the years 1850 and 2000. Before you decide on someone, we would like you to talk to older members of your family or older people in your locality to find out their ideas. Closing date for receipt of entries: November 25.
