Farmers’ market proposed for Newport

An application has been submitted to the Westport Electoral Area office for the establishment of a farmers’ market in Newport.

Senior executive officer Martin Keating told the electoral area committee meeting on Monday that 15 to 20 members of this start-up market wish to operate to sell local produce and crafts. Mr Keating said that “we are looking very favourably towards it” and are “considering giving a licence to the market”.

Chair of the electoral area, Councillor Peter Flynn, welcomed the initiative as “local suppliers are coming together and are taking the bull by the horns.”

The councillor however lashed out at the electoral boundaries which operate in Newport — with one half of the town belonging to the Westport Electoral Area and the rest being in the Belmullet Electoral Area. He said that it was “absolute madness” and “cannot be allowed to continue”.
