A number of councillors this week called on Mayo County Council to ensure that the clock in Ballinrobe town on the courthouse is restored to proper working order. Cllr Damien Ryan had included the item as part of a notice of motion for the Claremorris Electoral Area meeting this week.
Senior executive engineer for Mayo County Council, Tom Ferrick, informed the meeting that there could be a problem with the maintenance of the clock. He said the access to the clock was through the old courthouse in the town and there was no decision on what would happen to the building, there was a possibility that the council would not have access to it in the future if it is sold. He also said the current access inside the courthouse to where the clock is would have to be completely removed and a new one installed on health and safety grounds.
Both Cllr Damien Ryan and Cllr Michael Burke told the meeting it was essential that an access to the clock be maintained as it was important to the people.
