Stress and worry leading to a bad night’s sleep

A Vogel's natural herbal sleep aid Dormeasan revealed the results of a national sleep survey that has shed light on the chronic bad sleeping patterns and habits present in Ireland today.

Fifty seven per cent of people questioned admitting they suffer with sleeping problems with almost half of these people citing worry and stress as the leading factor, and a further 26 per cent of people questioned admit to finding it difficult to sleep when they have something on their minds.

The effects of the recession have unfortunately had a knock-on effect on our sleeping patterns as a nation, with 46 per cent of all people questioned citing stress and worry as two of the main contributing factors in a bad night's sleep

The factor that was least felt to have a negative impact on sleep was a lack of exercise. Surprisingly only six per cent of people questioned felt that children were a factor in poor sleeping patterns. Ten per cent of people surveyed attributed poor sleep to an excess of caffeine in their diets.

The clear overall winner of the best route to the land of nod was to read a good book before bedtime, with 22 per cent of people questioned revealing that this is their tried and tested technique. The joint second most popular natural methods to nod off is to take in an evening walk or watching a DVD. The romantics in the midlands felt that being intimate with your partner was the best way to combat evasive sleep and the least effective ways to drift off are counting sheep and having a snack before bed.

Natural health specialist Nicola Murphy comments on the importance of healthy sleeping patterns for today's busy lifestyles, “It is so important to get a good night's sleep, it is the body’s best defence and most powerful medicine. In today's fast paced and high stressed lifestyle, we can forget that we need to put time aside to aid sleep, but it is as important as the emphasis we place on our diets. It was disappointing to reveal the prevalence of sleep disturbance in Ireland today, but it was also encouraging for us to discover that people are using natural methods to combat sleeping problems, like reading a book or going for a walk in the evening.”

A Vogel provides organic fresh herbal remedies, including natural sleep aid Dormeasan, a combination of valerian and hops to ease sleep disturbances.
