The proposed Connacht Golf Industry Conference which was slated to take place this coming Sunday, January 29 in Westport has been cancelled. In a press release this week, organiser of the event Paul O’Neill said that the interest in the event from the golfing public had not materialised and he had no choice but to cancel the event. He went on to say that he did still hope to see an umbrella marketing organisation set up for the 41 clubs in the province and would be getting in touch with them all individually in the coming weeks.
Balla
Last weekend’s men’s competition was claimed by Tim Evans with a score of 37pts, he finished just one point in front of Pat Kilgallon in second, with John Parsons taking third place. The ladies’ stableford was won by Aine McSuibhnie on 38pts, Catherine McNulty came second on 38pts, and Mary Conlon was third on 34pts.
The winter league which is currently running at the club is being led by the team of Catherine McNulty and Martin Moylette with a score of 193pts. Vinny Gibbons and Mary Conlon are in second place one point behind, with the duo of Paraic Cuffe and Breege Moran in third, and the duo of Chris Mannion and John Parson in fourth place.
Ballina
Last Sunday’s 14 hole stableford competition was won by Kenneth Sheridan with a score of 40pts. Adrian Wall came second with a score of 36pts and Paul Cronin finished off the competition in third place.
In the ladies’ nine hole stableford competition last weekend, Josephine O’Hora was the winner with a score of 16pts, with Bertha Cooke winning the Thursday competition also on a score of 16pts.
The Spring League will be played over the last two Sundays in February and the first two Sundays in March. The competition is open to both ladies and men and the time sheet will be placed on the relevant notice boards next week.
Ballyhaunis
In last weekend’s winter league event sponsored by Curley’s Bar, Ballyhaunis, the junior section was claimed by Cian Henry with a score of 40pts. The ladies’ was claimed by Norrie Dillon on 37pts, with Fiona Grogan coming home in second on 33pts. The gents’ competition was won by Kevin Henry on a score of 40pts. His scoring over the back nine was the decisive factor in keeping him in front of Barry Freeman in second place, Shane Freeman was a point further back in third place.
Claremorris
The CBE sponsored three-ball rumble was won by the trio of Myles Forde, Seamus Mannion, and Padraig Mannion. The singles competition was claimed by Tom Higgins with a score of 35pts, with Mary Walshe taking the ladies’ competition with a score of 27pts.
Mulranny
Club officers were to the fore at Mulranny at the weekend with captain, Martin McLoughlin, the clear winner with an excellent score of 42 pts. In second place was Brian McDonald on 39pts, with treasurer Paul Gavin taking third prize with a similar score. Club competitions will continue next weekend and during February. Play is allowed on Saturdays and Sundays in the competition.
Golfers are reminded that Mulranny’s open Fridays for men and women are now in full swing. Julie Hassett of Achill was the winner of last Friday’s competition with a score of 35pts. Players are required to enter their scores on the Golfnet system, by GUI, or ILGU swipe card, or home club numbers, and handicaps will be adjusted as per scores. The entry fee for visitors, for the 18 holes stableford is €15 and €5 for members.
Westport
The ladies’ nine hole competition was won by Nuala Moody on a score of 16pts, with Jean McAleer in second place on 15pts. The gents’ front nine competition was claimed by Pat Bree on 51pts with Jerry Moran one point behind in second place. The back nine gents’ competition was won by Padraig Kilcoyne with a score of 50pts, with David Scott finishing in second place on 49pts.
Competitions chairman Padraig Kennedy has issued the following rules for the matchplay stages of the winter league: Round (1 ) matches to be completed by Sunday, February 5. Individual matches may be arranged by agreement between the captains of each team on any day preceding that date. Team sheet showing order of play must be exchanged before the first match commences. All matches to be played over 18 holes on the yellow course. Check local rules. Format is two singles matches and one foursome.
