Man parked up on footpath and then reversed into car

A man from Ballina was convicted and fined at Castlebar District Court this week for careless driving, for not having road tax, and for illegally parking on a footpath.

Peter McAndrew, Porturlin, Ballina, represented himself and told the court that he was “guilty about a few things”.

Garda Sean McHale gave evidence that on April 14 2011 at 3.30pm, gardaí were called to a traffic accident on Cavendish Lane where they met a woman whose car had been hit by McAndrew.

Cavendish Lane is a one way street, however the defendant was parked on the footpath blocking traffic flow. The defendant then reversed into the woman’s car and left the scene. Gardaí spoke to him on May 19 when he said there “wasn’t much of an accident” and that the woman “got his registration number”. McAndrew’s vehicle was not taxed.

The defendant told the court that he “only touched the car”. Payment has been received by the injured party for damage caused.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined him €250 for careless driving and disqualified him from driving for one year. For not having road tax he was convicted and fined €500, and for parking on a footpath he was convicted and fined €100.
