Earlier this week the Mayo League announced the five recipients of the 2011/2012 third level scholarships. This initiative which is a first for the Mayo League is something that it hopes to expand in the coming years. The five recipients were Gerry Cunningham (Westport United ), John Hutton (Claremorris ), Owen McNamara (Conn Rangers ), Chris Rowland (Castlebar Celtic ), and Gerry Sweeney (Bangor Hibs ). The five players will be presented with a cheque for their first instalment of the grant and a specially designed certificate at Milebush Park on Saturday, January 28 at 6.30pm. The Mayo League also thanked all those who applied for the scholarship and Arcon Recruitment, Castlebar, which carried out the interviews on all applicants on behalf of the Mayo League.
Connacht Junior Cup action this weekend
A number of Mayo clubs will be in action this weekend in the third and fourth round of the Connacht Junior Cup. In round three, Westport United will be taking on Corrib Rangers in the Sportspark in Westport on Sunday at 2pm.
There are four Mayo sides in action in the fourth round on Sunday also, with Straide and Foxford United up against the fantastically named Dynamo Blues at the Green at 2pm. Kicking off at the same time in Carramore will be Manulla who will take on NUIG, while the final fourth round game involving Mayo teams is an all Mayo clash between Iorras Aontaithe and Urlar United in Carnenash.
In the Junior Shield, Ballyheane will travel to Galway to take on Medtronic, while Mulranny United will host Loughrea. Both games also take place at 2pm on Sunday.
Kick Start coaching courses coming up
The FAI will host both Kick Start 1 and Kick Start 2 coaching courses in Milebush Park, Castlebar, during March. On Saturday March 3 the Kick Start 1 course will take place. This course is designed to assist beginner coaches, parents, teachers to introduce young children (six to nine ) to fundamental warm up activities, basic activities, and fun games in a safe, structured, and stimulating environment. The course fee is €45. This course is limited to 24 participants so book early to avoid disappointment. Kick Start 1 coaches will receive an FAI Kick Start 1 certificate of attendance as part of the National Coaching Development Programme.
The Kick Start 2 course will take place on in the same venue between Friday, March 9 to Sunday March 11, from 7pm to 10pm on Friday, and from 9.30am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.
