Castlebar and Ballina rank 11th and 16th respectively in the 2011 survey of litter levels in 53 towns and cities by Irish Business Against Litter. Both the towns, which are classed as Clean to European Norms, were also awarded a Sustained Excellence award for being litter free for five years in a row.
An Taisce, which conducts the litter surveys, announced Trim as the cleanest town at an awards ceremony which took place in Dublin on Monday.
