'Ballina council fails to pass budget

Unlike their colleagues in Mayo County Council and Castlebar Town Council this week the elected members of Ballina Town Council failed to strike a budget at the annual budget meeting.

The members met on Wednesday night and were brought through the budgetary proposals for the town by town manager Paddy Mahon and senior executive officer Paul Benson. The draft budget for the year had prepared for an expenditure of some €5 million for the year ahead, with no rise in the commercial and industrial rate for the year. However despite adjourning and meeting in committee for almost an hour the members were not ready to pass the budget when the meeting recommenced on Wednesday shortly before 10pm. The members elected to adjourn the meeting and meet again next Wednesday at 7pm, before the monthly meeting of the local authority which has had its starting time pushed back to 8.30pm on the same evening.
