Visiting restrictions at Mayo General Hospital

Mayo General Hospital is advising that due to the presence of the suspected norovirus (winter vomiting bug ) in one ward in the hospital, visitors will only be permitted to non-affected areas during visiting times.

Arrangements will be made for family members of critically ill patients on the affected ward to visit and this should be arranged through the nurse on duty in the ward.

“We would encourage the public with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea to contact their GP or GP out-of-hours service in the first instance and not to attend the emergency department unless absolutely necessary,” stated a hospital spokesperson.

GPs are requested to only refer patients to the acute assessment unit or the emergency department who are in need of immediate assessment/admission.
