Drivers asked to heed pedestrian crossings

Dear Editor,

Could I please draw attention to some driving practices taking place at the pedestrian crossing outside St Patrick’s Boys National School in Castlebar, that may pose a danger.

This new crossing which was put in place last September is not being heeded by a number of motorists who drive through regardless, even when young children are in the vicinity.

Now that the children are back at school after the Christmas break, I would like to remind drivers that they are required to stop at the crossing to allow children and their parents cross.

As a parent collecting children at the school, I have noticed on occasion cars keep going through while people are standing to cross, and on a couple of occasions when a car has stopped, it has then proceeded forward by overtaking on the inside.

Could motorists please remember to adhere to the law at the pedestrian crossing before someone gets seriously injured.

Thank you.

Tom Cleary,

Parent of children at St Patrick’s National School, Chapel Street.
