Mayo Operation Transformation walk set for Westport

The new series of RTE’s Operation Transformation is once again joining forces with the Irish Sports Councils Sports Partnership network to encourage people to become more physically active in 2012. A series of walks, one in each county, will take place across the country on Saturday January 14.

The Mayo walk, either 3km or 5km along the Slí na Sláinte route on the Westport Greenway, will take place at 2.30pm. Participants are requested to meet at the Mill Street/High Street car park entrance to the Greenway at approximately 2.15pm. Qualified walking leader instructors will be on hand to guide participants through the walk and also to give advice on follow on programmes, etc.

This year Westport Leisure Park is providing refreshments and support on the day. All participants will be entered for some spot prizes donated by the local fitness provider. In addition it is including a new initiative, titled FitWalking, on its new year programme which will be perfect for those looking to improve their basic level of fitness through walking.

Event organisers Mayo Sports Partnership, Westport Leisure Park, and Mayo County Council are encouraging people of all age groups to turn out on the day. Some local personalities, including Cora Staunton of Mayo/Carnacon Ladies GAA, and cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Councillor Christy Hyland, will also be in attendance.

Mayo Sports Partnership co-ordinator Charlie Lambert commented: “Last year’s event was a great success with many continuing on walking for weeks afterwards. After Christmas people are thinking of doing some exercise for whatever goal they may have and don’t know where to start. We hope to be able to provide support for people who are seeking to become more active.”

There is no cost involved. Participants are asked to wear loose clothing and to bring some water.
