Befriending Mayo — keeping in contact with older people

Are you living alone, or concerned about a relative or friend who is living alone during the cold weather? Then it may be a good time to arrange a Befriending Mayo telephone call.

Befriending Mayo is a network of community groups in partnership with the HSE which make telephone contact with older people who would like a regular call. There are 10 services throughout the county, including Lacken, Kiltane, Ballinrobe and Headford/Shrule, Castlebar, Claremorris, Westport, Crossmolina, Ballina and Knockmore. Many of these community groups also offer services such as meals-on-wheels, which may also be useful during the winter months in particular.

All befrienders are trained by the HSE, have received Garda clearance, and make calls from their local centre. People will only get a call if they ask for one and can decide what time and day it suits them best to get a call, and can stop receiving calls whenever they want to.

For more information on the Befriending Mayo service, you can contact the HSE at 094 904 9064.
