A careless driving charge against a 24-year-old man was dismissed at Castlebar District Court this week.
It was outlined that on March 15 of this year at 5.15pm, gardaí responded to a two car accident at Ballintubber.
One of the drivers was Cadhia Costello, 4 Woodpark Avenue, Westport — an unaccompanied learner driver who had no L plates displayed. The other defendant was Liam Coyne, Tullyduff, Kilmaine who rear ended Costello’s car as she attempted to turn right into Ballintubber Stores.
Both received minor injuries and were brought to hospital.
Coyne had been driving home from work that evening when the incident occured. the court was told—he had not allowed sufficient braking distance. Inspector Joe Doherty informed the court that there was a strong setting sun on the evening of the accident.
The court heard that Costello, a GMIT student, has since passed her driving test.
Neither defendants has a previous conviction.
Judge Mary Devins directed that if Coyne contribute €150 to St Vincent de Paul the careless driving charge would be dismissed under section 11A. Costello was also directed to contribute €75 to the same charity.
