Think safer, slower, and sober on the roads this winter

Gardaí have appealed for all road users to be safety conscious and to advise family and friends accordingly in the lead up to Christmas.

Motorists are advised to always drive at a speed where the driver is comfortable and capable of stopping or taking evasive action in an emergency situation.

Motorists are reminded that speed limits are the maximum permitted speed for ideal driving conditions when visibility is clear and when weather and road conditions are good.

During darkness and while driving in adverse weather conditions motorists are advised to reduce their speeds by a minimum of 20 per cent.

Motorists are reminded that drink driving limits have been reduced and driving with any alcohol consumed places the driver at risk.

Plan your journey and check the weather forecast in advance, where possible make your trip during daylight hours.

Have your vehicle checked for defects such as lights, breaks, tyres, and wipers and always carry an advanced warning triangle and a fluorescent jacket.

An Garda Síochána encourages all road users not to compromise the safety of themselves, their passengers, or indeed any other road users, and gardaí wish all road users a safe and incident free December 2011.

Think safe, slower, and sober for December 2011.
