Ballina councillor seeks assurance in relation to renal dialysis unit

Contingency plans to allow the existing renal dialysis unit at Mayo General Hospital be upgraded are being examined at present according to Councillor Annie May Reape who tabled a question in relation to the issue at last week’s Regional Health Forum.

“The good news is that the HSE West is presently examining the options for a contingency service while the new renal dialysis unit is developed at Mayo General,” said Cllr Reape.

“In order for works to be carried out in upgrading the new unit, it will be necessary for the existing unit to be removed for a period of five months, but I am pleased that contingency plans to allow this to happen and the related costs are being examined at present.

“I am aware that many patients in Mayo were feeling anxious and worried about the situation but they can rest easy now in the knowledge that contingency plans will be in place before the existing unit is removed,” she added.
