Man stabbed in face in Castlebar

A local man received stab wounds to his cheek after he was assaulted in Castlebar on Monday night. Three other separate incidents also occurred in the Castlebar area on the same night, two cars were burnt out and destroyed and criminal damage was caused to a house in the town centre.

Superintendent Peter O’Boyle, who spoke to the Mayo Advertiser, said the stabbing occurred at 10.30pm on Bridge Street. The injured man was brought to Mayo General Hospital where he received treatment. Another man, who is from the area, was arrested at the scene and investigations into the matter are ongoing.

The superintendent said that three other incidents that occurred in the vicinity later that night are believed to be connected.

At 10.30pm a car was set alight on Lower Charles Street. Two hours later, at 12.30am, a second car was set on fire at The Curragh. Both cars have since been removed and technically examined by gardaí.

The final incident occurred at around 1.45am on Lower Charles Street when a window of a house was damaged. One arrest was made in relation to this criminal damage. A man was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and was later released pending further inquiries.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to any of these events to contact Castlebar Garda Station on 094 902 2222.
