Slow drinkers in pub after 2am

A Ballina licensee who permitted the consumption of alcohol after closing hours was convicted and fined at Ballina District Court on Tuesday.

On May 29 2011, Sergeant Gaynor went to Keith Barrett’s pub — Barrett’s pub, Hill Street, Ballina at 2.20am. The sergeant knocked on the door and after a delay the sergeant was allowed in. There were seven people still drinking on the premises.

Peter Loftus, solicitor for the defendant, said that Barrett was on the premises tidying up after the night, however there was no alcohol for sale after closing time — the people present were just slowly drinking alcohol which they had purchased before closing time.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined Barrett €300.
