Suspended sentence for man who was aggressive to shop staff

A drunk man who was abusive to shop staff after he was refused the purchase of alcohol was given a suspended sentence at Ballina District Court this week.

At a previous court sitting it was heard that gardaí were called to Tesco, Ballina on March 14 2011 at 8pm as Michael McDonagh, 6 McDermott Street, Ballina, was abusive to staff who would not let him buy alcohol.

Judge Mary Devins remanded the 55-year-old father of 10 on continuing bail to November 22 for sentencing.

At Tuesday’s sitting the court heard that the defendant has not come to garda notice in the intervening period.

McDonagh was convicted and fined €50 and sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 12 months.
