Castle Street handrail is welcome but needs a twin

The new handrail installed on one side of Castle Street in Castlebar last week will go some way towards safeguarding pedestrians accessing from Main Street but needs a matching twin on the other side.

According to Castle Street auctioneer and music agent Tommy Collins, the new rail is a great improvement but, because the downward gradient is so steep, another rail, at the very least, is needed on the opposite side.

“You still have to cross the road to use the rail and once the frost and snow comes, people just won’t be able to come onto this street at all unless there is something to hold onto on each side,” he said. “Otherwise on the street we are happy with how the town council got in and out doing the work and overall Castle Street has improved tremendously.”
