Mulherin welcomes modern changes to legal administration

Fine Gael TD for Mayo Michelle Mulherin has this week welcomed the commitment given by Minister Justice, Equality and Defence Alan Shatter, that he will introduce more modern administrative procedures to the legal system.

“Following my representations to the Minister, I welcome his confirmation that certain antiquated administrative practices in our legal system will be changed. The changes will reduce costs for clients and speed up the legal process.

“As things currently stand, the Central Office of the High Court does not accept papers and documents by document exchange or post. This adds to legal costs on litigants outside of Dublin and is in spite of the fact that all other court offices and State Departments accept documents in this matter.

“Following my proposals, the Minster has agreed to introduce a dual system whereby both postal and personal filing will be accepted in the High Court. The Minister has also indicated that, resources permitting, the courts shall move towards accepting documents via email, where appropriate. This will enable legal practitioners to attend to their business in a manner we expect in the 21st century. As a qualified solicitor, this represents progress and common sense and I commend the Minister for facilitating these changes.”
