Superintendent Michael Murray of Westport Garda Station is to retire from An Garda Síochána on December 1, having served for over 31 years in the force.
Superintendent Murray is the District Officer in charge of the Westport district and joined An Garda Síochána in 1980. He served as a garda in Sundrive Road, Dun Laoghaire and firearms training at Garda Headquarters.
In December 1993 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and transferred to Templemore, Co Tipperary in January 2004. He subsequently served as a Sergeant in Mountbellew, Co Galway, Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, the in-service training school, Castlebar and Sergeant in charge of Castlebar Garda Station.
He was promoted to the rank of Inspector in May 2003. On promotion he transferred to Glenties, Co Donegal before returning to Ballina Garda Station in July 2004 and subsequently served as Inspector at Castlebar Garda Station from June 2007. He was promoted to the rank of Superintendent in May 2009 and took charge of Westport Garda District in June of the same year where he served as District Officer in Mayo until the present date.
A function to mark his retirement will take place on Friday December 9 at 8.30pm in Knockranny House Hotel, Westport. Tickets are available for this function at Westport Garda Station at a cost of €25 per person.
