New hand rail installed for Castlebar pedestrian safety

The safety of pedestrians walking from Main Street Castlebar down to Castle Street has been improved with the installation of a new handrail along the corner wall adjoining Parsons Shoe Shop this week.

Following the road enhancement works on Main Street which saw extensive new footpaths installed, it was found that safety of pedestrians turning down the hill towards Castle Street could be compromised, particularly in wet and icy weather conditions.

Cllr Ger Deere has welcomed the hand rail, stating: “I have been inundated with representations from residents and members of the general public. Since the refurbishment of Main Street and Castle Street took place the incline seems much steeper and this is proving difficult for pedestrians.

“I raised this matter at the last town council meeting and am delighted my suggestion was listened to and taken on board.”
