The Cathair na Mart branch of Comhaltas Ceoltórí Éireann recently hosted a two-day féile to commemorate aspects of Mayo’s cultural and heritage, including music, language and folklore. This annual event was centred round the figure of John McGrath from Erris, a famous composer, fiddle player, and teacher of Irish music. McGrath’s contribution to Irish traditional music is largely forgotten by the general public and remembered mostly by the older generation of Irish musicians.
CCE host set dancing classes every Monday night at 8.45pm in Matt Molloy’s yard bar. All are welcome.
This year the branch will host its set-dancing workshop in The Castlecourt Hotel, Westport, on November 25, 26, and 27. Swallows Tail Céilí band will play for the opening céilí on Friday 25 at 10pm. Heather Breeze Céilí Band from Westport will be on stage at 9.30pm on Saturday, and Glenside from Mullingar will be on stage at 2.30pm on Sunday. Seamus O’Mealoid will be the tutor for the dancing workshop on Saturday and Sunday .
In conjunction with the workshop informal sessions of music, song, and dance will be held on Saturday at 9.30pm in Hoban’s Bar, The Octagon, and on Sunday at 7pm in Matt Molloy’s there will be a farewell session. A great weekend is guaranteed.
