The members of the Ballina Electoral Area committee will meet each month from now on. The electoral area committee, which comprises the elected county councillors from the Ballina area and the Méara of Ballina Town Council, along with a number of officials from Mayo County Council, had previously met once every two months.
The idea to meet each month was put forward in a notice of motion by chairperson of the committee Cllr Seamus Weir at the November meeting this week. He said the reasoning for making the meetings monthly was that a lot of things can get put back and not get properly dealt with at the bi-monthly meetings and it would assist the business of the monthly county council meetings if they met each month. He was supported by the other members of the committee. However, director of services for the area Paddy Mahon said that if the meeting were long ones each month it would put a strain on the officials and the work they were able to carry out. However the members agreed that the monthly meetings should last no more than a hour and it would be plenty time for them to get through the business of the meeting.
