Two Mayo take-aways were ordered to close last month

Two food businesses in Mayo were forced to close during October after closure orders were issued by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI ). The two food outlets — Phoenix Garden Chinese, Bridge Street, Westport and Mr Kebab, Dalton Street, Claremorris — were served closure orders by environmental health officers; Mr Kebab for breaches in food safety legislation, pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998 and Phoenix Garden for breaches of the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs ) Regulations, 2010.

Mr Kebab was served on October 21 and the order was lifted on October 26, while Phoenix Garden was served on October 14 and the order was lifted on October 20.

Nationwide there were 11 closure orders and one improvement order served on food businesses during October.

Commenting on these latest enforcement orders, Prof Alan Reilly, chief executive, FSAI said: “October has seen a record number of enforcement orders served on food businesses to date this year. Eleven closure orders and an improvement order are unacceptable statistics to be reporting. Consumers have to be confident that the food they are eating is safe to eat and the FSAI and enforcement officers will continue to use a zero tolerance policy in relation to breaches of food safety legislation. Food businesses should take full advantage of the information and support made available by the FSAI and its official agencies to ensure a basic and consistent food safety management plan is developed and put in place in line with legislation.”
