Winter League competitions see good scoring

In last weekend’s competition John Parsons was the winner with a score of 38pts, he finished two in front of Bob Leggett in second place. John O’Connor came home in third place, also on 36pts. The ladies’ competition was won by Geraldine O’Malley who scored 34pts, her play on the back nine kept her in front of Nora Heraty in second place and Catherine McNulty was back in third place on 33pts.

The presentation of outstanding prizes and cups will take place Durkan’s Bar, Balla, on Friday November 11. All prizewinners are requested to attend. If you are unable to attend, please nominate somebody to be there on your behalf. The Club AGM will take place on Monday November 14, all members requested to attend.

Ballina

The Winter League commenced on Sunday November 6 with a total of 34 teams taking part. The teams comprise both ladies and gents and the competition is played on a shotgun start basis. The beautiful weather conditions certainly helped the spirits and the scoring on the day was excellent. The league continues over the next three Sundays and the draw for tee placements for next Sunday is already on the main notice board. The winners of round one were Colm McLoughlin, Ronnie Cawley, Brian Cronin and Malcolm Nash, who finished on eight under par with a nett score of 55.1.

Ballyhaunis

Last weekend’s competition was sponsored by Frank Harrington, and Kevin Kilbride with a score of 34pts won the junior section of the competition. The ladies’ event was won by Mariette Potgieter on 37pts with Roisin Hill in second on 33pts. The gents’ competition was won by Ivan Freeley who scored 42pts, Thomas Murphy came second one point behind and Shane Freeman was third.

Claremorris

Keith Harte, with a score of 46pts, was the winner of the Suttons Oil-sponsored day at Claremorris Golf Club. David Burke was the Cat 1 winner with Martin Murphy taking Cat 2 and Andrew Finn the Cat 3 prize. The ladies’ competition was won by Norah Maloney on 25pts. The club AGM will take place on Friday November 25 at 8pm.

Mulranny

The Mulranny Park Hotel Winter League has reached the halfway stage, with the completion of round three at the weekend. The benign weather conditions contributed to the low scoring. The team of Fergus Rothwell, Paddy Chambers, JJ Kelly, and Martin O’Carroll ) led on 201pts closely followed by Liam Walsh, Christy McDonnell, JJ Mulchrone and John Feeney on 199 pts, with Dwayne Flynn, John McHugh, Noel O’Malley and Enda Lonergan in third place on 198 pts. However a number of other teams are hot on their heels. With bonus points on offer for the leading qualifiers, teams will be keen to have an advantage going into the final day Fourball Betterball on Sunday December 4.

The Bucko’s Bar, Castlebar-sponsored stableford competition, run in conjunction with the league, was won by Christy McDonnell with a fabulous score of 39 pts for 15 holes, with Alexis Loftus in close pursuit on 38 pts. David Ryder took third place on 37 pts. This weekend’s 15 holes stableford competition is sponsored by Centra Store, Newport and is open to individuals as well as team members.

Westport

In the gents’ winter league competition, Noel McHugh was the winner of the front nine competition with a score of 47pts, he finished just in front of Larry Hingerton in second place. The back nine competition was won by Steve Goggins on 48pts, with Peter Moran one point back in second place. Last week Nuala Walsh and Gerry Hughes were elected respective captains at Westport Golf Club for the 2012 season.
