Polish national swerved into car on right-hand side of the road

A two-car collision in Kincon, Kilalla, which occurred after a Polish driver swerved to the right-hand side instead of the left, causing the two vehicles to collide, avoided a driving disqualification at Ballina District Court this week.

On May 23 a Renault Scenic driven by Krysztof Adamus, 17 The Old Millstone, Kilalla Road, Ballina crashed into a car driven by a Mr John Moyles from Ballina. The crash occurred on a narrow road with a blind bend. When the defendant turned the corner and saw a car on the opposite side of the road he thought that because of the narrow road they might hit each other, and in that emergency situation he steered to the right as he would in Poland, and collided with the car.

The driver of the other vehicle said in his statement that neither of the cars were moving fast when the accident occurred. Both vehicles were written off and there were injuries sustained.

John Gordon, defending solicitor, said that his client underwent an alcotest at the scene and there was no trace of alcohol in his system. Mr Gordon added that Adamus had driven his friend and his friend’s son to church before the accident.

Adamus, who is married, a truck driver, and has no previous convictions, was also said to be held in high regard by he parish priest and his employer. Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined the defendant €250.
