Mayo County Council is owed over €10 million by the Department of the Environment for capital works already carried out and the council are refusing to spend money on other projects until they get paid.
At Mayo County Council’s meeting this week, during a discussion on the Achill sewerage scheme, County Manager Des Mahon revealed the staggering figure which is owed to the council.
Councillor Michael McNamara told the Manager: “I have been led to understand that that Department have sanctioned the funding in full for the Achill sewerage scheme and the only problem with it starting is that the council can’t come up with the money.” Mr Mahon told Cllr McNamara: “The first thing is that the Department owe us €10.5 million for work that we have already done for them. And I won’t spend another cent on these projects until we get paid for the work we have already done. There is no point the Department approving funding for projects when they haven’t even paid us for the last jobs we have done.”
