Taoiseach to officially open Bon Secours €15 million expansion

There will be smiles all round from the staff and guests at Bon Secours Hospital in Galway today as they welcome An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, for the official opening of the new €15 million expansion.

The Taoiseach is set to join Bon Secours Hospital chief executive Gerry Burke, group chief executive of Bon Secours Health System Pat Lyons, and Sr Goretti Spillane, chairman of Bon Secours Health System, as well as special guests and local representatives for the official opening of the impressive expansion which was completed in full in August this year.

Founded in 1954, Bon Secours Hospital Galway in Renmore, became part of the Bon Secours Health System, the largest private healthcare provider in Ireland, in 1999. The hospital is a 120-bed acute care facility providing a range of surgical and medical services. Figures show that currently there are 18,000 patients admitted per annum, comprising 6,000 in-patients and 12,000 day cases.

In 2006 a major expansion was completed resulting in four operating theatres, two endoscopy rooms, three minor procedure rooms, a 22-bed dedicated day ward, a radiology department and a consultant clinic building. In July 2009, an expansion plan costing €15 million was announced with the contract being awarded to Galway-based building contractors JJ Rhatigan and Company Ltd. Comprising three levels at the front of the hospital, the expansion provided 50 new patient bedrooms, physiotheraphy department, a new restaurant, and an enhanced laboratory, medical stores, and office accommodation.

The official opening ceremony is due to take place at 5.30pm tomorrow followed by a reception.
