Fine Gael TD for Mayo, John O’Mahony, has warmly welcomed the announcement by Minister for Education, Rory Quinn, that he will permit schools to re-employ teachers who retire between the first of December 2011 and February 29 2012.
It is expected that there will be a spike in retirements at this time as February 2012 is the final date on which public servants can retire and have their pension entitlements calculated on the older, higher rates.
The deputy said: “The expected increase in retirements of teachers and other public servants this coming February could have a significant impact on students as they approach their Leaving and Junior Cert examinations. With this in mind, I made representations to Minister Quinn, suggesting that he allow schools to temporarily re-employ Leaving and Junior Cert teachers who retire between the first of December 2011 and 29th February 2012 until the end of the school year.”
Dep O’Mahony said that: “ I am delighted that he has made this decision which be of benefit to a huge number of students as they approach their Leaving and Junior Cert exams. These teachers will now be able to be re-employed until the summer holidays.
“I would like to commend Minister Quinn for averting what would have been an extremely serious situation. This very practical measure which will be of huge benefit to students as they approach their exams”, concluded Dep O’Mahony.
