Council’s conviction for sewage leak is ‘unacceptable’ and ‘embarrassing’

Castlebar Town Councillor Eugene McCormack said that the conviction of Mayo County Council in the District Court last week for a sewage leak into the Castlebar River was “unacceptable” and “embarrassing”, during a meeting of the Water Supply and Sewerage SPC this week.

His party colleague Fine Gael Cllr Eugene Lavin concurred and said that it was a “health and environmental scandal” for the council.

Cllr McCormack also asked what action has been taken to ensure that this does not happen again during the interim phase of the construction of the town’s new sewerage plant.

Water Engineer Brian O’Reilly said that while “we had our day in court”, he assured the committee that a solution to the problem, which was of “substantial cost to the council”, is now in place to make sure that another incident of such a nature would not be repeated.
