Fine Gael TD for Mayo, John O’Mahony, has urged for the delay in the processing of applications for Mayo VEC to be dealt with as a matter of priority. Deputy O’Mahony was speaking this week following a response by the Department of Education to his Parliamentary Question on the issue.
“It is almost November yet only 493 out of 1,489 applications for Mayo VEC have been processed. This means that 996 students and their families are coming under considerable financial pressure to get through college.
“I urge that these applications be dealt with as a matter of priority and suggest that Mayo VEC provide an adequate explanation for the delay which is placing families and individuals under significant financial pressure.
“This compares very unfavourably with Roscommon VEC where 100 per cent of applications have been processed, and Sligo and Leitrim where over 75 per cent of applications have been processed. In Mayo less than one third of applications have been processed.”
