Last week the Mayo County Board sent out draft new structures to the different divisions for the Mayo GAA league in 2011. The new structures would see six divisions of 12 teams each, going from Division 1A right down to Division 1F. Currently there are seven divisions from 1A to 1G with 11 teams in Divisions 1A, 1B, 1D and 1E. Division 1C has 10 teams, with Division 1F having nine, and 1G eight teams.
The new proposals are pretty straightforward for the top couple of divisions, in Division 1A one team will go down and two teams come up from 1B. In 1B one team will go down, with three teams coming up from 1C. The third rung of the league ladder will see a lot of movement, with the bottom team from 1B dropping down and five teams from 1D coming up, with six of the current Division 1C sides staying where they are. In Division 1D it will be a similar situation with one dropping down from 1C and five coming up from 1E, while in Division 1E six teams will come up from Division 1F and one team drop into it from 1D. The bottom tier will be Division 1F which will be made up of the bottom placed team in 1F this year and three current 1F teams and eight teams coming up from Division 1E.
These new proposals will have to be passed by club delegates at the County Convention which will take place at Munnely’s in Geesala on December 5 2011, and clubs are reminded that any proposals they want considered for the County Convention should be submitted by this evening, Friday October 28.
Titles up for grabs
With the last scheduled round of league action down for this weekend there are still a few things to be sorted out at the top and bottom of a few tables. In Division 1A Castlebar Mitchels can pick up the title if they beat Knockmore in Munnelly Park on Sunday. If they fail to then Ballintubber will add the league crown to the championship title they picked up last weekend. At the bottom, Burrishoole are still in with a fighting chance after Ballina Stephenites conceded against them last weekend. They will have to pick up a win against Ballinrobe who are just one point in front of them in second last place.
In Division 1B Davitts wrapped up their spot in the top tier for next year with a win over Kiltimagh, but Breaffy can still claim the title and book their place in Division 1A with a win over Bohola Moy Davitts, piping the south Mayo men on their head to head record. At the bottom Parke are making the drop, while either Bohola Moy Davitts or Islandeady could join them if the new proposals are not passed at convention. In 1C Aghamore are the league champions with a game left, Ballyhaunis have their spot in 1B secured after a four point win over Swinford, who could join them if the new leagues come into place. At the bottom there are a number of teams looking to avoid the bottom spot on the final day. Most of the other divisions are all sorted at this stage, with Castlebar and Ballycastle both in with a shout of claiming the 1E title when they face each other this weekend.
