County manager Peter Hynes has once again emphasised the fact that in the current economic climate no guarantee can be given on the retention of any area office in the county.
Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway Walsh had asked the council executive to give a commitment that the area office in Newport would be retained. At the October meeting of Mayo County Council she said: “I’m dismayed to learn that staff in the Newport office could lose their jobs. I’d like a guarantee the office won’t be closed.”
In response to Cllr Conway, the county manger said: “No guarantee can be given or will be given. We’re at a stage where rationalisation will have to take place. It could happen with very little notice also.”
