A Mayo man charged with harassing a woman at various locations in Galway city for more than a year has been remanded on continuing bail with strict conditions.
Westport native Gerard Cunningham (33 ), with a rental address 1 Gort Na Bro, Rahoon, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court on Monday charged with harrassing a woman at locations in Galway city on dates unknown between April 1, 2009, and September 5, 2010, contrary to Section 10(1 ) and (6 ) of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.
Inspector Mick Coppinger told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has consented to the matter being dealt with summarily in the District Court. The court heard that it will be alleged that the accused man purposefully followed the injured party at various locations with one serious incident in which he shouted an offensive and threatening word directly in her face.
Judge Fahy accepted jurisdiction and remanded the defendant on continuing bail to appear again at Galway District Court on December 5, 2011, for election. A number of bail conditions were imposed which included that Cunningham was to have absolutely no contact in any way with the injured party. Defence solicitor Ronan Murphy then made an application for legal aid which was granted.
