Councillors concerned over funding for Shrule scheme

A number of councillors from the Ballinrobe Electoral Area expressed their concern as to where the tendering was for the Shrule village enhancement scheme in case the scheme lost out on Leader funding.

At a meeting of the Claremorris Electoral Area Committee on Wednesday Cllr Damien Ryan raised the issue asking what stage the process was at: “It’s a matter of urgency because the funding might not be there later on.” Cllr Patsy O’Brien supported his colleague saying: “The architects section drew up a plan to apply for Leader funding but it doesn’t seem to have moved, this is an urgent matter and there is a great need for it to be done.”

Senior executive officer for Mayo County Council Padraig Flanagan told the October meeting of the committee: “The architects section had drawn up plans to apply for funding, but there were changes made and it has to go out for re-tender. They are working on it, but there are staffing issues at present, but we hope to have significant progress soon.”

Senior engineer for Mayo County Council Patsy Burke added: “The tender process is only a small part of the total scheme we want to do there, we have also applied to the NRA for funding for a pavement overlay and we’re still waiting to hear from them about that.”
