The community of Inishturk were wished well in the adjudication this weekend for the Pride of Place Awards by members of the Westport Area Committee, who held their monthly meeting on the island on Tuesday evening.
The awards, which recognise and celebrate the vital contributions that community groups make to society, are significant in that they specifically recognise the involvement of the local community in all aspects of rural and urban life including regeneration projects, promoting social inclusion and cohesion, the promotion of heritage and environmental awareness.
Judging for the Pride of Place Awards will take place on the island on Saturday and Councillor Margaret Adams complimented the council and community for the “great amount of work done in and around the harbour” while Director of Services Peter Hynes said that he hoped the hard work put in by the community to showcase their island would “yield results”.
