Judge comments on drop in drink driving arrests

During this week’s sitting of Westport District Court Judge Mary Devins commented on a report she had read which said that the number of drink driving arrests in Ireland have been halved, which was not her “perception” from the number of drink driving cases which she presides over.

However, Inspector Mick Murray said that this figure was accurate and that when the backlog of old drink driving cases are cleared through the courts then the judge will notice the reduction in these cases.

Insp Murray said that there is now a high compliance rate, with one factor being the use of text messages between drivers to warn them of Garda presence and also because of the severe penalties for drink driving.
