An Islandeady man who tried to hit a pub bouncer after he was refused admission and then verbally insulted him was before Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.
Garda John Melia outlined that on Saturday July 16 at 1.38am there was a report of a disturbance outside Cox’s Bar, Castlebar.
After arriving at the scene, Garda Melia observed Enda Moylette, Derrycoorane, Islandeady, being restrained on the ground by two security men from the pub.
Moylette, who was intoxicated, was aggressive towards security staff and said to one of them: “Get of me you fat Polish f***er... you fat Polish prick.” It transpired that the security man is in fact Irish.
Subsequent to the incident, CCTV footage from the premises was obtained, which showed the defendant approach the front door where the security staff refused him entry. Moylette then took up a boxing stance and attempted to strike one of the bouncers.
The 25-year-old has no previous convictions and lives at home.
His solicitor James Warde said that his client is “genuinely mortified” about his actions that night, but “he lost the head”.
Judge Conal Gibbons said that the comment to the bouncer had a “quasi racist element... which worries me”. The judge said that we are a “multi-cultural” country and people who express such views “need to be stopped in their tracks.”
Moylette told the court that his reaction on the night “was terrible”.
Inspector Martin Byrne said his concern about the incident was that the defendant was barred from Cox’s earlier that night but returned later. “Full of beer and bravado,” the judge said.
The defendant gave a sworn undertaking that he would not go to Cox’s again.
Judge Gibbons said that he wanted the inspector to choose a Polish charity for Moylette to give €1,000 to by July 27 2012. If done the probation act will be applied; if not, the defendant will be convicted and fined €500.
