Ballina electoral area councillor Seamus Weir has called for “fair play” for people in the area of the Rathroeen landfill in accessing the bottle banks this week.
Cllr Weir brought up the issue at the Environmental and Agricultural Strategical Policy Committee of Mayo County Council. Cllr Weir said: “The people who live in the area put up with all the activity in relation to the landfill in the area, but they can’t access the bottle banks when they want to recycle glass at their nearest location without paying, unlike other areas in the county.”
Sean Smyth, senior executive officer for Mayo County Council, told the meeting the landfill site at Rathroeen had a wide range of recycling facilities and that the maximum fee for a car recycling a full load of items would be €3.40. He said that people should be encouraged to bring as many recyclables at a time as they can so that they would not be charged for a number of trips.
Cllr Weir asked whether the bottle banks in particular could be moved outside the area of the landfill where people do not have to pay. He was told that the council would look into it.
