Turlough residents face third winter without funding for essential bridge repairs

Members of the Turlough community are disappointed that there is still no funding available to carry out immediate works on a bridge entering Turlough, which joins the main link road from Turlough to the N5.

One local resident contacted the Mayo Advertiser this week to say that “it is coming up to the third winter without the bridge being repaired”, and that fact that the main link road from the village to the N5 is therefore closed, is “an inconvenience” to local residents who have to take other routes “which are more dangerous”.

The bridge and road were closed to residents after one of the arches on the bridge collapsed.

Local people have made representation to their local area representatives who have been seeking funding from the NRA for the project. However at a recent area meeting there was news that there is not any funding from the NRA for the repairs.

The female Turlough resident, who did not want to be named, said that the “road is an integral part of the local community” and is having an “adverse effect on the community as a whole as well as local businesses, tourism, land owners, farmers and road users”, and she hoped that local councillors would soon be able to secure funding.
